There are currently five schools in the
Memphis City School system that have a regular staff of
interpreters: Sea Isle and White Station Elementary Schools (White
Station Elementary is a little more oral focused), White Station
Middle, White Station High, and Avon School (for multiple
handicapped/severely mentally delayed/limited - Deaf and Downs
Syndrome, etc.). These five schools have mainstreamed classes as
well as self-contained classes to fit the child's needs according to
their IEP.
Desoto Central High School has a regular
staff of interpreters just across the state line in Mississippi (Desoto
County). Desoto County Schools are trying to build their mainstream
program where in the past, they contracted with the Memphis City
Schools.
