Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer
nonprofit Christian housing ministry. They help low-income families
become homeowners. The houses are not free. Families have to sign
a 20-year mortgage but do not have to pay interest on the loan. Some families do not make
enough
money to get a regular home loan but can afford to pay
for a Habitat home. The houses are not big or fancy but are built
strong. The family has to work 300 hours to help build their house.
DeSoto County Habitat for Humanity
builds one or two houses each year in Walls, MS. This year they
will build a home for a Deaf family, Matthew and Melissa Rainey.
They have two hearing children, Matthew Jr. and Macy.
It will take 8 – 10 weeks to build the
house. The first day to volunteer is October 6th at
8:00am and they will build the house frame. They will do decking
and put in windows and
doors on October 13th. They will build the
roof on October 20th. They will put up insulation and
drywall on October 27th. All of this is a guess because
it depends on the weather and how many volunteers.
If you want to volunteer to help build
the Rainey’s new home, please email Linda Griffith (hearnoevilsister@yahoo.com)
and tell her which Saturdays you want to help. The people who give
lunch to the volunteers need to know how much food to make.
There will be a walk-a-thon to raise money for Habitat for Humanity on October 21st
in Olive Branch, MS. Email Linda if you want to register for the
walk-a-thon.
